A Simple Tip for Healthy Winter Skin

Winter is officially here and has brought with it rough dry skin. Since my spa weekend with the girls isn’t for another couple of weeks (I can’t wait ladies!) I did a quick online search and found a super simple (and cheap) solution—-SUGAR. I couldn’t believe it…plain white sugar. Could it really work? Well, here are some instructions to try it for yourself. I found it did wonders for my ailing winter skin. Give it a try and let me know what you think. Thumbs up or Thumbs down?

1. Mix together 2 tsp olive oil and 2 tsp sugar
2. Wet skin and gently rub to exfoliate.
3. Remove with a warm wet washcloth
4. Apply your normal moisturizer

Make your smile sparkle the natural way

With an impending dentist appt today, I thought it was only fitting to share a recipe for whitening your teeth the natural way.  Who really wants to spend the time or money to have it done in the dentists’ office anyway? I try to spend as little time there as possible. So…try this recipe and then SMILE away!

Step 1: Make the paste
In a small bowl, mix 2 teaspoons each of baking soda and hydrogen peroxide. Stir until it is the consistency of regular toothpaste. You may need to add a bit more peroxide.
Tip
Add a drop or two of sugar-free mint flavoring.
Step 2: Brush your teeth
Apply the whitener to a toothbrush and use as if it was regular toothpaste. Leave the whitener on your teeth for at least two minutes.
Step 3: Rinse
Rinse thoroughly. Do not swallow the whitener solution.
Tip
Try rinsing with cranberry juice to get rid of the whitener’s taste; it also kills bacteria.
Step 4: Put away the extra whitener
Cover the bowl with the plastic wrap and set the extra whitener aside for another use.
Step 5: Repeat
Brush with the peroxide paste no more than once a week. Hydrogen peroxide can cause tissue damage if used too often.

A simple facial cleanser that you may already have in your fridge

I have a great skin care cleanser for all those with sensitive skin (like me). This tip is from one of my all time favorite books, “Naturally Beautiful”. The secret is to wash your face in the morning with plain whole milk yogurt. That’s right, plain whole milk yogurt. It sounds silly but the good bacteria in yogurt that is good for your belly is also good for your skin. This is my morning cleanser when I’m not washing off makeup. Its all natural, cool and refreshing and won’t leave any chemical residues on your face. Bonus, if you already buy this for eating, you don’t need to spend extra money. You can also add vitamin e oil if you have dry skin or salt to exfoliate. It also makes a great base for facial masks but we’ll leave that for another post. Enjoy!

Lightening my travel load

While preparing for a recent road trip I reviewed everything in my usual toiletry travel bag and challenged myself to simplify it. I decided to take some Dr. Bronners castille soap to see if I could eliminate some items. First out came the shampoo, then the soap, then the Johnson and Johnson baby wash, then the face wash, then the toothpaste. It was so freeing to be able to take one item instead of all these other specific items. I even found myself using it as dishsoap to clean Conrad’s sippy cup at the hotel.

Happy to say I will be making no more trips to walgreens for travel size shampoo, soap, etc. But…I do have to admit that in the end I filled that travel bag up with makeup. Come on people…I’m still a female afterall :)

An idea to simplify your beauty routine

So here’s my latest beauty obsession…JOJOBA OIL. I have simplified my beauty routine by using it as a facial moisturizer, hair conditioner, eye makeup remover and all over body moisturizer. It is all natural and feels like a luxurious treat. Its been such a win win for me. I have saved money by spending less at Aveda (still love their products but buy less of them), it has given me a speedier beauty routine and best of all…more bathroom counter space (woohoo!). Its especially wonderful on my dry sensitive skin and color treated hair. Ah…sometimes being a woman is so much fun.

P.S.
I must give props for this tip to my all time favorite and dearest book titled “Naturally Beautiful”. Don’t know how or why I stumbled upon this book many years ago but it constantly inspires me to look beyond the normal beauty product section of the store.

Get the healthiest skin ever!

I stole this time and money saving beauty tip from Alicia Silverstone’s “The Kind Life Diet” book and decided to try it since I think she is sooooo naturally beautiful. This will leave your skin feeling like you just got a professional facial without the price tag or time at the spa.

Fill your sink with hot water (as hot as you can get it without burning yourself). Dip a washcloth in, wring it out gently and massage onto every part of your face and neck. Don’t forget your eyes (feels awesome). Pat dry and apply your normal moisturizer.

If its the end of the day and I need to wash off makeup I use Dr. Bronners castille soap before the above.

I have been doing this for a month now and my skin has never felt softer and healthier.

You can do this anywhere and all you need is water and a washcloth. Doesn’t get any simpler. Love it!
